This past Tuesday, Britain’s Economist Intelligence Unit released the 2008 Global Peace Index. An article from CNN briefly explains what the list means:

The index, now in its second year, ranks 140 countries according to their relative states of peace, based on factors such as military expenditure and respect for human rights.

The article points out that the United States dropped a spot compared to last year, meaning that we have ‘decreased the peace’ (I’m in the process of trademarking that gem ;) ). What the article fails to mention is that they added 19 countries to the list, rising to 140 countries from last year’s 121. So I would think that slipping one spot isn’t that big of a deal. On the other hand, being ranked 97 only hints at how the rest of the world perceives us (or how poorly we perceive ourselves).

I’m definitely setting a life goal to visit the top 5 most peaceful countries:

1. Iceland
2. Denmark
3. Norway
4. New Zealand
5. Japan
